As the internet becomes faster and more prevalent, the possibilities seem to be limitless. Take the average home for instance.
Imagine a home where secure access is through your fingerprint. No longer do you need to worry about having to remember your key or be shut out. More importantly, no one else has the finger print necessary to gain access through the multiple security locks.
Imagine a doorbell that is attached to a video screen that not only shows you who is calling, but also takes either a photograph or a movie that you can download to your computer.
Imagine a home where you can control everything from TVs and satellite boxes to lights and air-conditioning from remote control.
Imagine a home where you can call wirelessly to other homes in the complex and talk with or without video at no cost. If they are not there, imagine leaving either a voice message or an SMS.
Imagine a home where you can call service to get your necessary groceries before you are up and dressed.
Imaging a home where, at the push of a button, you can close off all shutters and turn off all electrics except the refrigerator when you leave the home. Imagine opening it all up again at a push of a button. Imagine being able to do that from your mobile before you get home.
Imagine a home where heating and air-conditioning through a ground heat pump are controlled by remote control.
Imagine doing all of this with a single tablet that can move with you to wherever you are in the apartment.
To those of us that were born at a time when there was no central heating and where the most complicated switches were for the light and the on/off of the single station TV, this seems truly fanciful.
And yet, that is how my latest apartment is run. It certainly is one of the most high tech setups that I have come across and it is installed and running in my home in Turkey. I wonder what innovations we will get here next!
